Casket of the late Prof. Babatunde Sofoluwe, vice chancellor of University of Lagos (UNILAG) at the All Saints Church, Montgomery, Yaba for funeral service yesterday.
The remains of Prof. Adetokunbo Babatunde Sofoluwe, vice chancellor, University of Lagos (UNILAG) were yesterday committed to mother earth at Ikoyi Vaults and Garden, Lagos amidst wailing, eulogies and tributes from family members, staff, students and politicians.
The earthly journey of former vice chancellor ended on a grand note as the corpse was taken to the graveyard by the undertaker, M.I.C in a black Mercedes Benz car with customized number plate bearing Sofoluwe. After the funeral service at about 12.15pm family members and selected dignitaries were allowed inside the Ikoyi Vaults and Garden.
Before the funeral service, the body was taken to the university sports centre for the lying-in-state and it was an opportunity for staff and students to bid their vice chancellor farewell. Many of them could not hold back tears as they beheld the casket amidst wailing. As the pallbearer carried the casket to the funeral service, staffers and students who had paid their last respects stood up and bade the late vice chancellor farewell with songs as the corpse departed the university sports centre.
At the All Saints Church, Yaba, Diocesan Bishop, Rev. Adebayo Akinde, in his sermon entitled: Examine Your Life, told the gathering that Sofoluwe lived a meaningful and accomplished life in his 62 years sojourn on earth.
Akinde described the late vice chancellor as a gentleman, hardworking and exceptional university administrator, whose impeccable manner and cheerful disposition was not hidden all through his life and short tenure as vice chancellor of the university.
The widow of the late vice chancellor, Dr. Olufunmilayo Sofoluwe, in her tribute wrote, “Tee my favourite person, best friend, confidant, soul-mate and brother, as you would have advised, we leave all to God, he knows that I love you very dearly and always will. Be assured that absolutely nothing and no one can take anything away from my fond memories of our very special bond. If I had to choose again you know that I would still chose you as my partner, rest well my beloved.”
Former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, in his tribute wrote that the late vice chancellor was a fine and patriotic citizen, adding that he made his mark in his field, served with integrity, dedication as a university administrator. Former Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu, said the timing of his death saddened him deeply, noting that he was a man of great character. Tinubu further wrote that he was a gift to the nation and the university system.
The Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo said the late vice chancellor contributed to the growth and development of Information Communication Technology and the educational system in the country, saying the nation lost a rare gem, an astute academic and great university administrator.
The funeral service was attended by the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola; his Ekiti State counterpart, Dr. Kayode Fayemi; Deputy Governor of Delta State, Prof. Amos Utuama; Governing Council Chairman of UNILAG, Deacon Gamalile Onosode; Senate and council members.
