Consequent upon this, Richards said Chioma Ajunwa Oparah, the 1996 Olympics gold medal winner and the first African to win such a coveted title, has been appointed as the Promotional Ambassador throughout the duration of the promo.
Richards however stressed that the promo has the approvals of relevant authorities such as Consumer Protection Council (CPC).

To participate in the promo, Mr. Olusegun Koleoso, Business Development Manager of the company, said consumers should detach a coupon or sticker in the promotional packs of 400g sachet, 400 gram tins, 500g box and 900g tins and stand a chance of winning gold, silver or bronze, which will be instantly redeemed for cash of N50, 000, N30, 000 and N20, 000 respectively at any branch of Zenith Bank nationwide.

Commenting on the bold initiatives the company is taking in various social responsibility programmes as well as promotional efforts, Ajunwa-Oparah said this is the first time a company will come and give Nigerians the opportunity they have been looking for.

“It has been a long time we have been looking for companies to come and embrace sports in Nigeria. And more especially at the big glamour games like the Olympics. We need people to support all our athletes and this is what we have seen today. The company has partnered with the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC), and I know that a lot of money would have been committed."

“You can also see what the company is doing in the Cowbell Football Academy, grooming the younger ones, and at the same time, the National Secondary School Mathematics Competition (NASSMAC), which has become something enviable in Nigeria,” Ajunwa-Oparah added.

Part-time programmes in Nigerian Universities suspended

The National Universities Commission has announced the suspension of all part-time programmes run by universities in Nigeria.
The Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof. Julius Okojie Okojie said the suspension of the part- time programmes was to enable the regulatory body “streamline” them.
He said the work of the universities’ regulatory body was becoming more difficult because of the “products of the system” and urged the institutions to cooperate with the NUC to evolve a more focused and credible system.
“For now all part time programmes have been suspended. We are going to streamline them.
“No university should have more than 20 per cent of their student population on part-time with excess capacity to teach. All part time programmes must be located on campus. We do not want satellite campuses anymore,” he said.
The executive secretary said henceforth universities must score over 70 per cent in all areas of assessment, including the provision of library facilities before it would be accredited.
“But if your library facilities are poor or sub standard, even if you score over 70 per cent, you will not be considered fit enough for accreditation,” he stated.
Okojie said that out of the 31 programmes evaluated for the NOUN, 30 were accredited.
He said that four programmes of the university were granted full accreditation, 26 others accredited on interim basis while one programme was denied accreditation.

UNILAG introduces ‘UNILAG forever’ to discredit renaming of varsity

The University of Lagos has introduced a new badge to discredit the renaming of the institution after the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late Chief Moshood Abiola by the Federal Government.

The badge, which carries the inscription, “UNILAG forever,” was distributed to members of staff and students at a news conference by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday.

According to the chairman of the University of Lagos branch of the union, Dr Oghenekaro Ogbinaka, who was accompanied by his counterparts from the University of Ibadan and the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Drs Segun Ajiboye and Biodun Badmus and the National Treasurer of ASUU, Dr Demola Aremu, the badge is one of the steps being taken by the union to work against the renaming of institution.

He said, “we have mapped out plans to persistently reject the renaming of the University of Lagos. The renaming of the University of Lagos after 50 years of existence, is one of such actions that have been taken to an absurd level.”

He further said that government’s action would be challenged legally, while describing the pronouncement of President Goodluck Jonathan as a wrong and immoral decision intended to gain cheap popularity.

Following the submission of the amended bill that set up the University of Lagos to the National Assembly by the president recently, the academics vowed to storm the public hearing to thwart the decision of the government.

According to Ogbinaka, the union has gathered the support of eminent lawyers, including Chief Afe Babalola (SAN) and Wole Olanipekun (SAN) to argue its case both at the law court and during the public hearing.

In another development, the Nigerian Association of Law Teachers has condemned the renaming of UNILAG, calling on the government to rescind its decision.

Money Laundering: US Freezes Nigerian Embassy's Accounts

Bank of America, M&T Bank and Wells Fargo received directive from the US government to close the accounts of the Nigerian embassy in Washington and its consulate in New York on suspicion of money laundering after traffic on the various accounts raised a red flag.

$3.6 million dollars was said to have entered and left the accounts in under a month, the latest transaction being the withdrawal of $50,000 in hard cash by a top embassy staff.
The decision to freeze the accounts is sequel to intelligence report generated by a panel comprising representatives of the US Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the Department of Treasury, unknown to Nigerian embassy officials, to monitor wires and traffic in all the accounts operated by the embassy.

As part of efforts to resolve the issue, the auditor-general of the federation and a team of auditors left for the US to begin auditing the accounts of the embassy. Efforts by embassy officials to open new bank accounts with other American banks have so far been politely turned down.
The US have also ignored all requests by the federal government to unfreeze Nigerian embassy’s bank accounts in Washington, DC, and New York. The move, according to sources, is setting the stage for a potential showdown between the two countries with Nigeria also threatening to reciprocate by freezing the US embassy’s accounts in the country.

Nanny watched as 5yr old girl was raped at Bolingo Hotel, mom alleges

The rape of a five-year-old girl is generating the interest of the attorney general of the federation and minister of justice, Muhammed Bello Adoke (SAN), who on Wednesday applied to a Wuse Magistrate Court to take charge of its prosecution from the Police.

The 5 year old girl was allegedly raped at Bolingo Hotel by a certain Godwin Okon, a cleaner in the hotel.
Mr. Ejike Orji, a lawyer from the AGF’s chambers, made an oral application to the court to convey the AGF’s interest in taking over the matter because it involved a foreign citizen.

However, counsel to the accused, Suleiman Usman, opposed the application, arguing that the AGF could not takeover a criminal case without the fiat of an attorney general of the state, taking Abuja to possess the status of a state.

After both sides had been heard, Magistrate Folashade Oyekan fixed Monday 25th June for counsel’s submission of written addresses on the propriety of the AGF’s desire.

Mother of the rape victim, Queen Moses Idris, had reported the matter to the Canadian High Commission in Nigeria, citing weakness of Police prosecution. But she was advised to first exhaust all internal mechanisms before inviting the Commission.

She consequently sought the intervention of the AGF, who instructed a lawyer in his chambers to follow the case up.

In a letter to the AGF, she accused the Police, particularly the IPO of deliberately frustrating the matter by not turning up in court. The house help, Miss. Bright, who was in custody of the minor at the time of the rape, has since been apprehended by the National Agency for Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and Other Related Matters (NAPTIP).

According to Idris, her daughter is currently receiving treatment at Kings Care Hospital Abuja, after contracting Sexually Transmitted Virus (STV) from 35-year-old Okon. She said her daughter, who was unable to eat, drink or excrete for more than a week, is suffering from “Yielded profubed staph spotter Utlus” and “mellonotigreen mecid discharge” on her vulva.

“We logged into Bolingo Hotel in Abuja on 11th March 2012. Two weeks later, I secured a 28-year-old house help called Bright, through an agency; and on 8th May, my daughter was sexually molested. I will say rape because it has to do with oral sex,” she said.

“The 35-year-old Godwin Okon, who works as a house cleaner in the hotel, connived with my house help and did anal sex with my daughter. This man is a professional because at the end of the day nothing happened at the front (vagina). He penetrated my daughter through the anus and gave her his manhood for sucking. The house help, being an accomplice, told my daughter that ‘If you tell your mum, she will spank you,’ so my daughter became scared and she didn’t tell me about the first incident.”

Continuing, she said. “The same thing repeated itself more severely on Friday, the 11th, at about 8pm, when Okon was not working. As a cleaner, he was done with his job by 3pm. But by 8pm, Eliana said the house help invited Okon again to the room, and the same thing happened.

“This time around, my house help, Bright was sitting in the room, pretending to be watching African Magic while Okon sat, zipped down, brought out his manhood and told my daughter to sit. While my daughter was sitting on his lap, he tried to penetrate with his dick. When she felt the sharp pain at her bombom like she calls it, she jumped out and cried and said ‘Aunty bright, are you not seeing what Mr. Okon is trying to do?’ Bright repeated that ‘if you say anything to your mummy, your mummy will beat you.’

“At that point, Okon said he was going and at that point Aunty Bright said ‘go with Mr. Okon and lock the door.’ When she tried to lock the door, Okon zipped down again, brought his manhood and told my daughter to masturbate it, and told my daughter that it doesn’t hurt, that it is very soft. While he was doing that, he put his manhood in my daughter’s mouth and said ‘suck it like orange’ and she said, ‘while it was in my mouth mummy, I later felt some yacky stuff in my mouth, so at that point, he released.’ My daughter said it is ‘very yacky and she ran away, opened the door and left.”

Meanwhile, THEWILL can report that the management of Bolingo had in the past few weeks spent huge sums to compromise the case at the local police post where it was first reported.  They also moved to lobby local media houses not to report the incident.

Having failed in their effort to get the media out of the story, management has cooked up a denial saying the infant’s mother owes them over a million naira in unpaid bills adding that she came up with the rape story after she was written to pay up.

New Dell Laptop Offers 32.7 Hours Battery Life

Dell has announced Latitude business laptops with Intel’s latest core processors that can provide around 33 hours of battery life, but only when combined with attached battery packs.

The new Latitude E-series laptops will come with screens ranging in size from 12.5 to 15.6 inches. The company achieved 32.7 hours of battery life on a Latitude E6430, which is a business laptop with a 14-inch screen and Intel’s latest Core processor, code-named Ivy Bridge.

“The long battery life was reached with a nine-cell battery, and batteries that plug into the bay and under the laptop. The battery life was measured based on average usage of the laptop,” company officials said during an interview.

“Dell is trying to load up as much battery as it can on laptops,” officials said.

For example, users can remove an optical drive from a bay and replace it with a battery.

Some of the power-saving benefits also may have come from using solid-state drives, which are considered more power-efficient than hard drives that spin. Intel’s Ivy Bridge processors also are more power-efficient and help save power through features like the ability to shut down idle cores.

Intel provided more details on the Ivy Bridge processors on Thursday, saying the chips are more power-efficient and faster on applications and graphics than predecessors. The chips will be officially unveiled next week at the Computex trade show in Taipei.

“Dell is getting consistent, if not slightly higher, results on battery life as tests continue on other Latitude E-series laptops,”said a Dell spokeswoman.

Beyond the E6430, the company announced E6230 (12.5-inch screen), E6330 (13.3-inch), and E6530 (15.6-inch) laptops. Pricing on the laptops were not immediately available.

The new laptops also include the thin-and-light E6430S, which is a 14-inch laptop built into a frame typically used for laptops with 13.3-inch screens. The E6430S provides a glimpse of the company’s future thin-and-light laptops, which will be highly portable but also have strong security and remote management features.

Dell is also tuning its business laptops for enterprises by adding virtualisation and device management capabilities, said David Lord, Director of Product Planning and Marketing. The key is to be able to provide the mobile tools capable for a worker to access data at any time, while reducing the cost of servicing the laptop.

Most of you probably heard the rumours yesterday that the Dana plane that crashed was distressed for a while but could not make an emergency landing because the airspace was closed for 2 hours for the Presidential Jet carrying Dame Patience Jonathan. Absolutely not true. A rejoinder from the office of first Lady of Nigeria .......

Our attention has been drawn to the orchestrated plan to politicize the Sunday Dana Air crash in Lagos in which many people lost their lives, through rumours about the possible cause of the accident citing VIP movement involving the wife of the President.

We consider it callous, inhuman and devilish for anyone to have thought of wrapping such national calamity in political garb by insinuating that the plane crashed because the airspace was closed for the First Lady's movement in Lagos.

For the avoidance of doubt, the First Lady arrived Lagos at about 2pm on Saturday, 2nd June, 2012 for a private engagement and was billed to leave for Abuja on Monday, 4th June, 2012.

In compliance with her itinerary, the First Lady arrived Lagos on Saturday. She was at a public event on Sunday when the accident occurred and promptly abandoned the ceremony as a mark of respect for the victims and retired to the State House, Marina. She left Lagos at exactly 13.15hrs on Monday, 4th June, 2012, according to schedule.

It is therefore surprising that some mischievous persons will see this moment of National mourning as an opportunity to blackmail and impugn the First Lady's integrity.

This is the time for all Nigerians to be sober and pray for the repose of the souls of the victims and not a time to subordinate the interests of our nation to narrow self-serving interests.

Let us all put the interest of the Nation first in whatever we do.

Mrs. Jonathan had no intention to travel on Sunday and never did. Like all Nigerians, she has been mourning the dead.

UNILAG StakeHolders, Student, Management Vs Goodluck Ebele Jonathan

Lesgoo!!!: National Assembly has Denounced the renaming of UNILAG as announced by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. As such could only be done by the House of Assembly who constituted the institution as stated in UNILAG ACT 1962.

Also Babalola, who was Abiola’s lawyer, added that President Jonathan’s powers as visitor to the university did not include changing its name without recourse to the National Assembly.

In a statement, the senior advocate said many notable Nigerians who championed the call for the immortalisation of Abiola’s contribution to the current democratic dispensation were appalled at the manner with which the government about its decision.

“It is my view that things could have been better handled,” he said.

To him, while it is proper to give honour where it is due, such must be done in accordance with the law.

“Afterall respect for the law is an integral part of democracy itself,” Babalola said, and called for a review of the decision.

“It is my hope that the authorities concerned will review their position and take appropriate step to do things in a lawful manner.

“That to my mind would be the greatest honour to the late Bashorun MKO Abiola.”

Describing the renaming process as faulty, Babalola said: “It is pertinent to state that I do not entirely agree with the manner in which the government has gone about its decision.

“To my mind, a decision to honour the sacrifice of a man such as the Late Bashorun MKO Abiola required much more thoughtfulness and thoroughness than that which the current decision seems to display.

“I take this view in the light of the obvious illegality and unconstitutionality of the decision to change the name of the University of Lagos to Moshood Abiola University, Lagos.

“The University is a creation of statute.

“Everything relating to the University including its name, administration and control is provided and regulated by statute therefore necessitating that any action taken in respect of the University must comply with the provisions of the Law.

“Therefore, the most important yardstick against which the decision must be measured is the provisions of the University of Lagos Act, Cap U9, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

“The Act provides for the establishment, incorporation and administration of the University among others.

“Section 1 provides as follows: •’Incorporation and objectives of the University:

• There is hereby established a University to be known as the University of Lagos (in this Act referred to as “the University”) to provide courses of instruction and learning in the faculties of arts, law, medicine, science, education, commerce and business administration, engineering, and any other faculties which may, from time to time, be approved under this Act.

“•The University shall be a body corporate and shall have perpetual succession and a common seal.’

“The above reproduced section of the Law without equivocation states that the name of the University is ‘University of Lagos’.

“This amply demonstrates that the name ‘University of Lagos’ is derived from an Act of the National Assembly.

“Any other name other than ‘University of Lagos’ would run contrary to the provisions of the Act.

“With the above in mind, it is not difficult to see that the name announced by President Jonathan is unknown to the University of Lagos Act.

“This is so for the following reasons: Being an Act of the National Assembly, the provisions of the University of Lagos Act can only be amended by another Act of the National Assembly.

“Prior to the decision of the Federal Government to change the name of the University, no amendment was made to the provisions of the University of Lagos Act.

“The decision of Mr. President ostensibly acting in concert with the Federal Executive Council, amounts to an usurpation of the powers of the National Assembly.

“Section 4 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended confers Legislative Powers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the National Assembly which consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives.”

Besides, Babalola said the powers vested in the President as visitor had their limits.

“They do not empower him to unilaterally direct or effect a change in the name of the University.

“I state this for the following reasons: The powers of the visitor are as expressly contained in the University of Lagos Act.

“It is settled that where power is vested in any individual or body, such body or individual cannot exceed the powers which had been so vested. To do so would be to act ultra vires.

“A careful perusal of the provisions of Section 16 of the Act will reveal that the exercise of the powers vested in the visitor of the University must be consistent with the provisions of the Act.

“This is the direct purport of Section 16(3)(b) which requires bodies and persons comprised in the university to give effect to the instructions of the visitor which are consistent with the provisions of the Act.

“Clearly, a unilateral change in the name of the university from that stated in Section 1 of the Act cannot under any guise, be regarded as consistent with the provisions of the Act...

“The powers vested in President Jonathan under Section 16 of the University of Lagos Act are not wide enough to support the decision of the Federal Government to change the name of the University of Lagos to Moshood Abiola University, Lagos.”

UNILAG ALUMNI ASSOCIATION COMMUNIQUE OF EXTRA-ORDINARY GENERAL MEETING by Olalemi Adeyemi for Press Club UNILAG

This was presented by Adeyemi Adefulu MFR, Ex-SUG President and adopted by the house
The University of Lagos Alumni Association at its Extra-Ordinary General Meeting held at the University of Lagos today 3rd January, 2012, met to consider the issue of the purported change of name of the University of Lagos to M.K.O. Abiola University, by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan on the occasion of the Democracy Day to celebrate the 13th anniversary of uninterrupted democratic dispensation in Nigeria on Tuesday 29th May, 2012.
The meeting resolved as follows:
1. That it fully associates with the need to give a befitting national honour for the martyr of Nigerian democracy, the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, whose historic role and supreme sacrifice played a major role in the restoration of democratic order in Nigeria .
2. That by the surreptitious and arbitrary method the Federal Government adopted, the purported re-naming of the University of Lagos was a dishonour to the memory of a man who died in pursuit of democracy.
3. That by its refusal to consult widely the Government, unfortunately, lost the opportunity of knowing which would have been the best method of honouring the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola and unwittingly turned a popular wish into an unfortunatem controversy.
4.The unilateral change of the name of the University of Lagos to MKO Abiola University is unacceptable to our Association for several reasons, inter alia,
a) The announcement is illegal because it is against the letter and spirit of the University of Lagos Act which specifically provides that the name of the university shall be University of Lagos. The Unilag Alumni Association therefore submits that it is only by a proper amendment of the University of Lagos Act that an act of the National Assembly can be amended and not by an arbitrary Presidential act or pronouncement;
b) The announcement was made without consultation with the stakeholders of the University- the Senate, Council, Alumni or the National Assembly etc and was effected arbitrarily and in utter disregard of processes and procedures which are most essential for validation and decision making in a democracy. We submit that secrecy and surprise are the usual tools of military dictatorship and not in a democracy;
c)The hurried, announcement was made in utter disregard of the fact that the university was in deep mourning and in the middle of the funeral rites of its valued Vice Chancellor, the late Professor Adetokunbo Sofoluwe, and was utterly insensitive and showed that the government was totally out of tune with reality;
d) the ill-advised and opportunistic announcement of the scrapping of a popular internationally recognized 50 year old brand was made in utter
disregard of the views and feelings of stake-holders strewn all over the world.
5. The Alumni Association notes with concern the defiant reaction of the Federal Government to the spontaneous objection of students, alumni and the general public when it stated that there was no going back on a patently illegal and insensitive action and notes further that this was most unfortunate and amounts to persisting in error which is totally unacceptable in a democratic dispensation and from a government founded on laws.
6.The Alumni Association challenges Mr. President to exercise an act of statesmanship by reversing this illegal and unpopular decision and to enter into a dialogue with the National Assembly and other stakeholders with a view to finding a more befitting way of honouring the late Chief M. K. O. Abiola.
7.Without prejudice to the desire of the Alumni Association to encourage a peaceful settlement of this matter in the interest of the nation, the Extra- Ordinary General Meeting of the Association hereby mandates the National Executive to seek redress in the court of law and take all legal measures to resist this illegality and ensure that the name of our university remains the University of Lagos.
8.The Alumni Association regrets the fact that the action of the Federal Govt. has unwittingly re-awakened the boycott of classes which it has not experienced for many years. The Association appeals to the University authorities to re-open the institution and we also appeal to the students of University of Lagos to go about their normal duties and to trust that the Alumni Association will consistently pursue this action to its logical conclusion until justice is done.
Other resolutions includes;
9. An appeal to school authority to open the school for academics
10. That students should not go out to protest anymore but should trust the alumni body to the name of the institution.
11. The management should not change any letter head or sign board.
