1, 500 Nigerian students face deportation in UK

Around 2,600 foreign students could be deported from Britain after their university was stripped of its ability to sponsor visas for pupils beyond the European Union, the government announced Thursday. The move provoked dismay from students and accusations that the move by the Conservative-led government, which is bent on reducing immigration, could damage Britain’s global reputation.

London Metropolitan University has lost its “highly trusted status” because a survey found significant problems with the qualifications of many of its foreign students, Immigration Minister Damian Green said.

In a “significant proportion” of cases, there was no documentation that students had a good standard of English, Green said, and there was no proof that half of those sampled were attending lectures. He said the sampling of the university’s foreign students indicated that more than a quarter did not have current permission to be in the country.

“Any one of those breaches would be serious,” Green told BBC radio. “We found all three of those breaches at London Metropolitan.”

A degree from a U.K. university is highly prized by many students abroad, and those from outside the European Union often pay higher fees than residents. The British government, which has cracked down on immigration in multiple ways, has pointed to student visas as a category ripe for abuse by those who may instead be looking for work.

London Metropolitan has 30,000 students, and 2,600 are affected by the government’s decision, said university spokesman Nick Hansen. Students from other European Union countries don’t need visas.
The affected students will have 60 days to find new sponsors once they are formally notified by the government, or they could be deported. A task force has been set up to help genuine students who otherwise qualify for visas, Universities Minister David Willetts said, but with the fall term imminent students have little time to find new sponsors and courses.

Contact details of the SSS personnel released online

News agency, AP is reporting that personal records, which includes names and home addresses of family members of employees of Nigeria's State Security Service have leaked on the internet.

Personal information of more than 50 past and current SSS employees, including that of the agency's DG - his mobile phone number, and bank account particulars, were posted in the comment section of a website.

AP wrote that the information was leaked along with a threatening message that claimed to come from Boko Haram. .

"This is a national embarrassment," said one intelligence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity as information about the leak was not to have been made public.

Marilyn Ogar, a spokeswoman for the SSS, did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Thursday about the leak.

Though the comments have been removed from the website, cached versions of the comments remain online and intelligence service agents have been killed by Boko Haram members in the past.

The list includes former and current agents across the country, including Director-General Ekpeyong Ita. Those reached by the AP who were willing to talk expressed disbelief that sensitive information like that could make its way to the Internet.

"I was shocked to see my details posted on the Internet," said one former agent, who declined to be named out of safety concerns. "I've not heard anything from anybody. I was surprised that such information could be leaked."

Charly Boy prays in church, reacts to nude photos, & introduces alter ego named Linda

The article below was sent to me by the press people who work directly with Charly Boy. In it, the area fada addresses the nude photos of him that went viral online some days back, and also introduces the woman in him named Linda. Enjoy...
The news of Charlyboy’s invitation to one of the new generation churches in Abuja on Sunday was no doubt visited with a lot of criticisms from some people who believed that it was rather a waste of time having the acclaimed Areafada in church.
The heavy criticisms that visited his invitation to ThisRanch Sunday service was due to the latest nude picture of the social activist that has gone viral on the social media. Even with the objection, and the wave of gossips going round the internet, Pastor Gbenga Adenuga, the General overseer of ThisRanch church had insisted on bringing Charlyboy to church in order to share his deep experience with his church members.
Despite people’s objection which the Areafada had considered normal, ThisRanch church hall at the silverbird gallery was filled to capacity as different people trooped to the church in order to hear, and probably speculate about the Areafada’s preaching.

Areafada who was in church with his father, Rtd Justice Oputa, his mum, Lady D and staff of New Wave Productions and Taakra Academy  arrived  amid cheers from the congregation.

After some heavy prayers and worship songs, Charlyboy took the central stage, attending to some sensitive questions from the Pastor, Gbenga Adenuga. According to the Areafada “he was in church to share his experiences with the congregation who were mostly young people whom he believed needed to be encouraged. In his opening speech, the areafada said “ I came to pray and to share my experiences with you, most important I came to pray that God should forgive us-Nigerians, our sins for all we have done to the country politically.

Responding to the question on whether Charlyboy believes in the hands of God in the life of an individual, the enigmatic social crusader had avowed that God, during creation had given each and every one of us our various gifts, and that it was left for that individual to get connected to the good things God has provided for them. According to  the Areafada “ we are all  have been created in the image and likeness of God, and if that is the case, then God created all of us for a purpose, and that purpose can only be realized when one gets connected to it, through his own creative ingenuity.

Responding to the question on his recent nude picture, Charlyboy said, I wonder if people are creative in this part of the world at all, stating  that some of the shows put up by the brand were actually meant to express the freedom that Nigeria so desires but never came. He affirmed that no such nude picture was sent by the brand to the internet, but however advised Nigerians to begin to look at the most pressing political issues and all other positive things he had done in the country instead of wagging their tongues over some naked picture whose origin cannot be traced.  According to CB, “It is all about the mindset, and I want to say that Nigerians of this generation only see, and believe in the façade and not in the reality”

Encouraging the congregations on how he got to where he is today, Charlyboy says “ it took sheared determination, consistency, doggedness and tremendous focus to stand where I’m today” He narrated how he had spent 7 years in the village just to begin what his parents never really wanted him to do.

The shocking revelation in the church by Charlyboy was that he doesn’t smoke, drink alcohol nor womanize. He gave the difference between Charles oputa, Charlyboy and Linda, stressing that Charles Oputa is that responsible family man, with eight children and 12 grand children. Charlyboy, he said is never allowed to Mr. Charles Oputa’s house, referring to Charlyboy as a creation and a character. According to Charlyboy, there is a woman in him whose name is Linda. It is that Linda that wears make-ups.  He said that Linda directs him on how to be compassionate like women. He stated that Linda was responsible for all the humanitarian works he had done over the years. According to him, without Linda, he couldn’t have done all that.  “Linda was created to have to be compassionate like a woman” CB asserted

Speaking on the present reality in the country, Charlyboy said, despite the rot, he was confident that things will one day change for the better. He stressed that he lives in Nigeria, but will never let Nigeria to live in him.

Trailer kills 3 F.C.E Students Osiele, Abeokuta

Three students of the Federal College of Education, Osiele, lost their lives around 4pm on Fri 3 August, 2012 on the Abeokuta-Ibadan Expressway, after a trailer smashed into a stationery bus some students were in, killing one. The other two that died were students waiting by the School gate when the accident occurred.

According to the students, this is the sixth time a trailer-caused accident will be happening in 2012 alone at the College gate.

After the accident, F.C.E students took laws into their hands, walking en masse from the School gate down to Eleweran burning tyres and chorusing that the State Government must do something about it. Lives are not valued here in this part of the world.

It has been discovered that these heavy duty vehicles don't slow down, instead speed through major junctions and bus stops. Especially in this case, a major bus stop, close to the Osiele Market- a major market for Obantoko/Osiele Residents.

Policies or laws should be made concerning these Heavy duty Vehicles, their movement should be restricted to Midnight period and not day time when pupils, students, indigenes and Older men and women are crossing the road or standing by the roadside/bus stop.

David Mark Denies Calling For Social Media Censorship

Senate President, Senator David Mark, was last week quoted by a newspaper asking for a clampdown on social media, saying that people now use them to demean their leaders. Now the Senate President is saying he was misquoted

Below is a statement from his special adviser on media, Kola Ologbondiyan, plus the the full text of what the senate president really said at the gathering
Recently, the President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, delivered a keynote address at the Senate press corps Retreat in Umuahia, Abia Sate. The theme of the Retreat was: The Role of the Media in Promoting Good Governance. In his address, the President of the Senate had asserted that “the emergence of the social media like Facebook, twitter, blackberry messenger, YouTube etc have changed the face of the media practice by making information sharing easier, faster and quicker. But this is not without its demerits. Social media has become a threat to the ethics of media practice and good governance because of its accessibility and absolute freedom. Every freedom carries a responsibility. Even in the advanced democracies, where we all agree that good governance is practiced, there is no absolute freedom.

Continuing, Senator Mark expressed the belief that “there must be a measure to check the negative tendencies of the social media in our country. I say this because media practice, particularly journalism, process news gathering and dissemination. It also operates a feedback mechanism and where the practitioners erred there is room for rebuttal. But in the social media a faceless character can post any information that is absolutely false and misleading but will never retract it. At the end of the day one is bombarded with questions over what one has no business with. I suggest that schools of mass communication and journalism should review their curricular to include the operations of social media.”

Senator Mark also informed the audience that since he was quoted out of context that mobile phones was not for the poor myth, he had learnt to read a prepared text wherever he went to deliver an address. “I have challenged anybody to show me a quote in my own words where I said telephone is not for the poor. Nobody has been able to produce it yet I have to defend this everyday that what I said was if you must use a phone then you have to pay for the service.”

Noting that he always love to speak from the heart, the President of the Senate said he hoped and prayed that whatever he would present in his address to the Senate Press Corps at the event would not be misconstrued and misrepresented to Nigerians who were not present at the event.

It was as if Senator Mark saw tomorrow or had a premonition of how his innocuous remark on the social media would be misinterpreted and misrepresented by mischief makers who have been lurking around to attack him.

Hardly had he returned to his seat after the address when mischief makers began to work on their blogs in the social media. The message of the President of the Senate, delivered in a simple language, has not only been misconstrued, it has become misrepresented and had begun to spread like a wildfire. Mark had become the victim of the fear he had expressed before his address.

The wildest among the reactions said Senator Mark had called for censorship of the social media. There were those who said the President of the Senate stated that social media was being used to insult the leaders of the nation like him while others became as mundane as alleging that he wanted the social media to stop criticizing those in authority and to write only their good sides. All these are absolute falsehood.

From the excerpts of the speech quoted above, it is manifest that the President of the Senate neither called for the censorship of the social media nor alleged that the medium was being used to insult the Nigerian leaders like him. He also did not ask the social media to stop criticizing the Federal Government and write only on its good sides. Rather, he called for measures that would check the negative tendencies inherent in the use of the social media. That, I believe, is a genuine call that would help refocus the medium.

One would therefore have expected on-line publishers to join the clarion call made by Senator Mark that the assault to news gathering and dissemination being perpetrated on the social media be checked. There are several instances when social media activists have posted falsehood and readers believed them only to discover later that the post was bogus. How does this help the credibility of the social media as a medium? For instance, few days after members of the National Youth Service Corp posted to Bauchi State went to camp, a section of the social media posted falsehood that Boko Haram sect had attacked the Bauchi camp and about 50 people killed.

It was soon discovered that the information was false and totally mischievous. How can this be justified? Yet Senator Mark did not call for sanctions against those who made such posts but called for a check against such negative tendencies.

For the avoidance of doubts, the President of the Senate’s interest in the media has never been hidden and he demonstrated this in his several interfaces with the stakeholders of the industry before the passage of the Freedom of Information Bill by the 6th National Assembly.

Even at the Umuahia event, he expressed kind words for the media and its conscientious operators by saluting “the courage, doggedness and steadfastness of the Nigerian media.” Senator Mark also acknowledged the fact that “the press has been in the vanguard for the promotion and sustenance of democracy we now enjoy. Even the struggle for independence was pioneered and fought for by the Nigerian media.

“Sometimes I do disagree with you, but the media generally has fared well. They can still do more by deliberately planning and sustaining the efforts to bridge the information gap between the leaders and the led. The press can achieve this if it applies the basic principles of patriotism, accountability, transparency, and objectivity in the discharge of its duty.”

Is it not curious that some social media activists turned the table against Senator Mark by concocting lies and ascribing them to him? Was it for nothing that they ignored the details of his printed speech? Was there an agenda to deliberately denigrate his personage and cast a slur on his hard earned reputation? How else can one rationalize the insistence of some social media activists that Senator Mark called for the censorship of the medium even when his speech showed clearly that he never made such a call?

Perhaps one would have ignored some of the ridiculous posts but for the successive analysis that have been following. It is suspect that in most of these analyses of this hoax, there are subtle attempts to foist a label of “social media must be censored” on the Senate President. This is mischievous, irresponsible, wicked and unjust agenda that will not stick.

Senator Mark did not make any gaffes in his keynote address to the Senate Press Corps on the role of the media in promoting good governance.

Rather, his critics, who have continually ignored the text of his address which he read in the public, are mischief makers.

Deputy Governor and Shehu of Borno escape bomb attack

A suicide bomber blew himself up near the Maiduguri Central Mosque in the capital city of Borno State, killing himself and at least five others.

It was gathered that among the dignitaries that were observing Friday prayers at the mosque were Deputy Governor Zannah Mustaphar and the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Kyari. Both men were evacuated alive after the attack. It is not yet clear if any was injured.

Several other people were injured in the attack, and have been taken to nearby hospitals.

Witnesses said a boy of about the age of 15 was noticed walking towards the two dignitaries as they exited the mosque after the prayers.

Security aides were said to be suspicious of the manner in which the boy approached the two men, and tried to apprehend him, while shielding the VIPs.

At that moment, the bomb was detonated. Security officials said five people have been confirmed dead so far in the blast, with two soldiers among the critically wounded.

“Five people have been killed and six others injured in the Maiduguri Central Mosque suicide bomb attack,” said Sagir Musa, spokesperson for the Joint Task Force in the state.

Cowbell Milk supports Olympics with national consumer promo

Appoints Chioma Ajunwa-Opara as Promo Ambassador
Cowbell Milk, the flagship brand of Promasidor Nigeria Limited has launched a national consumer promotion targeted at creating fun and excitement around the 2012 Olympic Games. The promo is tagged “Cowbell Olympic Medal Rush.” The promo which was unveiled last Friday in Lagos is expected to run for three months.

Besides the promo, Cowbell Milk is also the Official Milk of the Nigerian contingents to the 2012 Olympics Games in London.

Chief Keith Richards, managing director of the company said the promo is intended to create opportunity for consumers to win cash prizes up to N50, 000, and that, 10 lucky star prize winners will be treated to an all expense paid trip to the London 2012 Olympics.

Consequent upon this, Richards said Chioma Ajunwa Oparah, the 1996 Olympics gold medal winner and the first African to win such a coveted title, has been appointed as the Promotional Ambassador throughout the duration of the promo.
Richards however stressed that the promo has the approvals of relevant authorities such as Consumer Protection Council (CPC).

To participate in the promo, Mr. Olusegun Koleoso, Business Development Manager of the company, said consumers should detach a coupon or sticker in the promotional packs of 400g sachet, 400 gram tins, 500g box and 900g tins and stand a chance of winning gold, silver or bronze, which will be instantly redeemed for cash of N50, 000, N30, 000 and N20, 000 respectively at any branch of Zenith Bank nationwide.
Also, cartons of Cowbell 400g sachets will be given as consolation prizes.

Cowbell Milk Brand Manager, Mr. Abiodun Ajiborode, said the promo intends to reward loyal consumers, adding that, it will also entrench the Cowbell brand in the minds of the consumers while creating fun and excitement around the brand.

Commenting on the bold initiatives the company is taking in various social responsibility programmes as well as promotional efforts, Ajunwa-Oparah said this is the first time a company will come and give Nigerians the opportunity they have been looking for.

“It has been a long time we have been looking for companies to come and embrace sports in Nigeria. And more especially at the big glamour games like the Olympics. We need people to support all our athletes and this is what we have seen today. The company has partnered with the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC), and I know that a lot of money would have been committed."

“You can also see what the company is doing in the Cowbell Football Academy, grooming the younger ones, and at the same time, the National Secondary School Mathematics Competition (NASSMAC), which has become something enviable in Nigeria,” Ajunwa-Oparah added.

Cowbell Milk has been in the Nigerian market since 1993. It is currently the No.2 milk powder brand in Nigeria with strong commitment to national nourishment and innovative corporate social responsibility such as National Secondary School Mathematics competition, Grass root soccer, Parasoccer and so many others.

Part-time programmes in Nigerian Universities suspended

The National Universities Commission has announced the suspension of all part-time programmes run by universities in Nigeria.
The Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof. Julius Okojie Okojie said the suspension of the part- time programmes was to enable the regulatory body “streamline” them.
He said the work of the universities’ regulatory body was becoming more difficult because of the “products of the system” and urged the institutions to cooperate with the NUC to evolve a more focused and credible system.
“For now all part time programmes have been suspended. We are going to streamline them.
“No university should have more than 20 per cent of their student population on part-time with excess capacity to teach. All part time programmes must be located on campus. We do not want satellite campuses anymore,” he said.
The executive secretary said henceforth universities must score over 70 per cent in all areas of assessment, including the provision of library facilities before it would be accredited.
“But if your library facilities are poor or sub standard, even if you score over 70 per cent, you will not be considered fit enough for accreditation,” he stated.
Okojie said that out of the 31 programmes evaluated for the NOUN, 30 were accredited.
He said that four programmes of the university were granted full accreditation, 26 others accredited on interim basis while one programme was denied accreditation.

UNILAG introduces ‘UNILAG forever’ to discredit renaming of varsity

The University of Lagos has introduced a new badge to discredit the renaming of the institution after the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late Chief Moshood Abiola by the Federal Government.

The badge, which carries the inscription, “UNILAG forever,” was distributed to members of staff and students at a news conference by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday.

According to the chairman of the University of Lagos branch of the union, Dr Oghenekaro Ogbinaka, who was accompanied by his counterparts from the University of Ibadan and the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Drs Segun Ajiboye and Biodun Badmus and the National Treasurer of ASUU, Dr Demola Aremu, the badge is one of the steps being taken by the union to work against the renaming of institution.

He said, “we have mapped out plans to persistently reject the renaming of the University of Lagos. The renaming of the University of Lagos after 50 years of existence, is one of such actions that have been taken to an absurd level.”

He further said that government’s action would be challenged legally, while describing the pronouncement of President Goodluck Jonathan as a wrong and immoral decision intended to gain cheap popularity.

Following the submission of the amended bill that set up the University of Lagos to the National Assembly by the president recently, the academics vowed to storm the public hearing to thwart the decision of the government.

According to Ogbinaka, the union has gathered the support of eminent lawyers, including Chief Afe Babalola (SAN) and Wole Olanipekun (SAN) to argue its case both at the law court and during the public hearing.

In another development, the Nigerian Association of Law Teachers has condemned the renaming of UNILAG, calling on the government to rescind its decision.

Money Laundering: US Freezes Nigerian Embassy's Accounts

Bank of America, M&T Bank and Wells Fargo received directive from the US government to close the accounts of the Nigerian embassy in Washington and its consulate in New York on suspicion of money laundering after traffic on the various accounts raised a red flag.

$3.6 million dollars was said to have entered and left the accounts in under a month, the latest transaction being the withdrawal of $50,000 in hard cash by a top embassy staff.
The decision to freeze the accounts is sequel to intelligence report generated by a panel comprising representatives of the US Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the Department of Treasury, unknown to Nigerian embassy officials, to monitor wires and traffic in all the accounts operated by the embassy.

As part of efforts to resolve the issue, the auditor-general of the federation and a team of auditors left for the US to begin auditing the accounts of the embassy. Efforts by embassy officials to open new bank accounts with other American banks have so far been politely turned down.
The US have also ignored all requests by the federal government to unfreeze Nigerian embassy’s bank accounts in Washington, DC, and New York. The move, according to sources, is setting the stage for a potential showdown between the two countries with Nigeria also threatening to reciprocate by freezing the US embassy’s accounts in the country.

Nanny watched as 5yr old girl was raped at Bolingo Hotel, mom alleges

The rape of a five-year-old girl is generating the interest of the attorney general of the federation and minister of justice, Muhammed Bello Adoke (SAN), who on Wednesday applied to a Wuse Magistrate Court to take charge of its prosecution from the Police.

The 5 year old girl was allegedly raped at Bolingo Hotel by a certain Godwin Okon, a cleaner in the hotel.
Mr. Ejike Orji, a lawyer from the AGF’s chambers, made an oral application to the court to convey the AGF’s interest in taking over the matter because it involved a foreign citizen.

However, counsel to the accused, Suleiman Usman, opposed the application, arguing that the AGF could not takeover a criminal case without the fiat of an attorney general of the state, taking Abuja to possess the status of a state.

After both sides had been heard, Magistrate Folashade Oyekan fixed Monday 25th June for counsel’s submission of written addresses on the propriety of the AGF’s desire.

Mother of the rape victim, Queen Moses Idris, had reported the matter to the Canadian High Commission in Nigeria, citing weakness of Police prosecution. But she was advised to first exhaust all internal mechanisms before inviting the Commission.

She consequently sought the intervention of the AGF, who instructed a lawyer in his chambers to follow the case up.

In a letter to the AGF, she accused the Police, particularly the IPO of deliberately frustrating the matter by not turning up in court. The house help, Miss. Bright, who was in custody of the minor at the time of the rape, has since been apprehended by the National Agency for Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and Other Related Matters (NAPTIP).

According to Idris, her daughter is currently receiving treatment at Kings Care Hospital Abuja, after contracting Sexually Transmitted Virus (STV) from 35-year-old Okon. She said her daughter, who was unable to eat, drink or excrete for more than a week, is suffering from “Yielded profubed staph spotter Utlus” and “mellonotigreen mecid discharge” on her vulva.

“We logged into Bolingo Hotel in Abuja on 11th March 2012. Two weeks later, I secured a 28-year-old house help called Bright, through an agency; and on 8th May, my daughter was sexually molested. I will say rape because it has to do with oral sex,” she said.

“The 35-year-old Godwin Okon, who works as a house cleaner in the hotel, connived with my house help and did anal sex with my daughter. This man is a professional because at the end of the day nothing happened at the front (vagina). He penetrated my daughter through the anus and gave her his manhood for sucking. The house help, being an accomplice, told my daughter that ‘If you tell your mum, she will spank you,’ so my daughter became scared and she didn’t tell me about the first incident.”

Continuing, she said. “The same thing repeated itself more severely on Friday, the 11th, at about 8pm, when Okon was not working. As a cleaner, he was done with his job by 3pm. But by 8pm, Eliana said the house help invited Okon again to the room, and the same thing happened.

“This time around, my house help, Bright was sitting in the room, pretending to be watching African Magic while Okon sat, zipped down, brought out his manhood and told my daughter to sit. While my daughter was sitting on his lap, he tried to penetrate with his dick. When she felt the sharp pain at her bombom like she calls it, she jumped out and cried and said ‘Aunty bright, are you not seeing what Mr. Okon is trying to do?’ Bright repeated that ‘if you say anything to your mummy, your mummy will beat you.’

“At that point, Okon said he was going and at that point Aunty Bright said ‘go with Mr. Okon and lock the door.’ When she tried to lock the door, Okon zipped down again, brought his manhood and told my daughter to masturbate it, and told my daughter that it doesn’t hurt, that it is very soft. While he was doing that, he put his manhood in my daughter’s mouth and said ‘suck it like orange’ and she said, ‘while it was in my mouth mummy, I later felt some yacky stuff in my mouth, so at that point, he released.’ My daughter said it is ‘very yacky and she ran away, opened the door and left.”

Meanwhile, THEWILL can report that the management of Bolingo had in the past few weeks spent huge sums to compromise the case at the local police post where it was first reported.  They also moved to lobby local media houses not to report the incident.

Having failed in their effort to get the media out of the story, management has cooked up a denial saying the infant’s mother owes them over a million naira in unpaid bills adding that she came up with the rape story after she was written to pay up.
